Why Was Lynn Swann Working A Bowling Tournament?

Athens, GA (May 12, 2008) - I remember my brother telling me how awesome it was when he met Lynn Swann at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. "His hands were huge," he told me. But times certainly have changed since then. Swann has gone from a very visible presence on ABC Sports (1976-2005) to an unsuccessful bid for Governor of Pennsylvania to (insert pause here) working as a sideline reporter for bowling on CBS Sports.

It was strange watching this NFL Hall-of-Famer working as a sideline reporter for the CBS Sports Spectacular coverage of the U.S. Bowling Congress Clash of Champions. If there was ever a sports broadcast that a sideline reporter looked or seemed out of place, this would be it. Perhaps it is his desire to stay active in sports braodcasting, but it still looked like a huge step down. Could it be a way for CBS Sports to ease him in for a larger role on NFL coverage down the road? This seems unlikely since CBS has done away with sideline reporters on NFL coverage and it is difficult to see him in a color analyst role. But stanger things have happened, so all we can say is "stay tuned".
