Athens, GA (Oct 17, 2008) -
Barack Obama and
John McCain were taking jabs at each other

last night. But it was not a debate, and the jabs were funny. It was a fundraising dinner for the
Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation. While watching, my wife asked me who Al Smith was, and in a moment of karma that could not have possibly been scripted, I responded that he is a former governor of New York State. Did I know this because I am a native New Yorker? Nope. It just so happened that she asked me at the exact moment I came across a reference to Smith in
Harvey Frommer's most excellent new book,
Remembering Yankee Stadium: An Oral and Narrative History of the House That Ruth Built. The book just arrived yesterday, and I as I said, the moment could not have been scripted better.
A review of the book will be coming next week.
