Athens, GA (Jan 6, 2008) - Next up in our recognition of the best of breed in sports new media today, the focus turns to College Sports Information Departments. This was a tough decision. We wanted to focus on SID staff that use blogs to share and disseminate information. We are not talking about coaches blogs or athletes blogs, but blogs written by and published by the sports information staff at Division I colleges, particularly those colleges/universities with limited budgets and staff.

The winner of the 2008 Eye on Sports Media "Bloodshot Eyeball" Award for Best Sports information Department Blog goes to the Black Knight Blog, published by the sports information department at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Picking the blog written by award-winning Bob Berretta and his staff kind of went against an unwritten rule we have that a blog is not really a blog unless it allows comments. But this could be overlooked because it is a military organization and not a business like CNBC.

Why did we overlook this? Because Berretta and his staff have taken the time to produce a product fully incorporated into their on-line branding. Navy does not even come close to doing that.

The runner-up, and a very, very close runner-up, is Idaho State University's "The BengalBlog!" Frank Mercogliano and company also do an excellent job of sharing information on their blog, including publishing depth charts there first. Then why are they the runner-up? becuase the site is not as tightly integrated into the athletic department's web site as the Black Knight Blog. They do allow comments, but the fact that is not fully integrated allowed the nod to go to West Point.
