Athens, GA (Dec 15, 2008) - There is only one true winner in the fact that Auburn University dumped, I mean accepted the resignation of, Tommy Tuberville. One might say it is Tuberville, since he will get paid $5.1 million to not deal with what goes in the Auburn athletic department. Others might say it is Gene Chizik, leveraging a stellar 5-19 record at Iowa State into a prime Southeastern Conference (SEC) job and contract (leaving minority coaches Rodney Garner - an Auburn alum - and Turner Gill wondering if they were even seriously being considered).

No, the real winner is agent Jimmy Sexton (pictured left). Not only does Sexton get his percentage for Tuberville's buyout, but he will also collect a percentage on Chizik. Phil Fulmer gets fired? Sexton gets paid. Tennessee hires Lane Kiffin? Sexton gets paid. You see, if you really want to have a shot at a prime coaching job in the SEC, you need to hire Sexton as your agent.

So if you want an elite coaching job in the SEC? Chances are you will need to hire Sexton. Otherwise you might not get a real shot, despite your credentials.

Perhaps the first step to reforming the coaching retention and recruiting process in the NCAA, and to truly level the playing field is to get rid of agents representing coaches?
