Georgia Golfers Balancing Nationwide Tour Tee Times with Final Exams

Posted by Christopher Byrne on Friday, April 30, 2010 , under , , | comments (0)

University of Georgia golfers Russell Henley and Harris English dind themselves in an enviable position this week. Based on their season long performance, and the Southeastern Conference Championship victory by Henley two weeks ago at Sea Island (GA), the two earned sponsor exemptions into this week's Stadion Athens Classic at UGA on the Nationwide Tour. There was only one glitch. The event is coinciding with finals week at UGA, forcing the two golfers to balance their practice and playing schedules with their exam schedules. In fact, the biggest risk is when their opening round tee times would be set.

Nationwide Tour Caddy Ready To Talk Trash With Georgia Bulldog Fans

Paul Edelstein is a New York native who now lives in Boca Raton, FL. This week is caddying for Justin Peters at the 2010 Stadion Athens Classic at UGA. Having adopted the University of Florida Gators as his favorite college football team, he could not resist taking the opportunity to tweak fans of the University of Georgia Bulldogs on their home turf, donning the blue and orange of the Gators.

Nationwide Tour caddy Paul Edelstein dons Florida Gator orange and blue to tweek University of Georgia fans on their own golf course at the 2010 Stadion Athens Classic at UGA

"I am surprised that nobody gave us grief as we played today," said Edelstein. "I was afraid they would throw Justin off of his game if they did."

That is good as Peters only made it into the event as the 12th alternate and has only made $3,563 in two events.

Edelstein may be brave on the golf course, but he is pragmatic off of the course, as he has not worn these colors into any of the downtown restaurants.

Iles Birdies Last Four To Share Clubhouse Lead at Stadion Athens Classic

Bradley Iles of New Zealand rolled off four consecutive birdies on his last four holes to finish 5 under and take a share of the clubhouse lead at the 2010 Stadion Athens Classic at UGA on the Nationwide Tour. Almost simultaneously on the connected 9th green, Martin Piller muffed a short chip shot from the back of the green and bogeyed the hole, dropping him one shot out of the lead.

Even Pro Golfers Will Sleep In a Car If They Have To

Posted by Christopher Byrne on , under , , , | comments (0)

Aussie Steven Bowditch is a solitary figure this morning on the driving range at this week's Stadion Athens Classic at UGA. With the morning rounds all teed off, the journeyman pro is wondering if getting to Athens at 3:00 AM this morning was worth the effort. But when you are told you are now the first alternate to get into the tournament, you do what you have to do so to get your scratch. Even if that means sleeping in your car.

Would You Go To Nationwide Tour Event if John Daly Was In the Field?

Posted by Christopher Byrne on , under , , , | comments (0)

John Daly has not played in a Nationwide Tour event since 1991. That apparently did not stop him from trying to get a sponsor's exemption in this week's Stadion Athens Classic at UGA. I first heard the rumor yesterday from a University of Georgia golfer. A follow-on rumor was that he was still planning to drive on up to Athens, even if he was not playing. So the best way to confirm or deny these rumors was to go to the source himself : @PGA_JohnDaly on Twitter.

Media Has Nicer Lounge Than Players at Nationwide Tour Event

Posted by Christopher Byrne on , under , | comments (0)

Looking out at the University of Georgia Course media center from the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA, it is easy to say that this Nationwide Tour event, now in its fifth year year in Athens, has to some extent taken a step up from its previous incarnation at Jennings Mill Country Club. The golf course is far superior. The tournament, now "owned" by the University of Georgia, is not suffering the financial burdens of bankruptcy that the former host course. And for sports media covering this event, we should have no complaints as we have better facilities than the players.

Jim Nantz Said What About Tiger's Language?

Posted by Christopher Byrne on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 , under , , , , , | comments (0)

Sitting in the 18th Tower at Augusta National, CBS Sports commentator Jim Nantz (biography) had no moral high ground from which he could criticize Tiger Woods for his off course behavior. But he did have the catbird's seat to "hear" whatever came from Tiger's mouth during play. That is he could hear whenever producer Lance Barrow (biography) decided to show Tiger live with a microphone trained on him and had it piped into his IFB and/or headset. So those times that Tiger did let his temper get the best of him irked Jim Nantz, as reported on Yahoo Sports' Devil Ball Golf blog. But Nantz's criticisms of Tiger's on-air vocabulary are, in the bigger picture, hypocritical when you look at any television network's body of work.

Well if you are lucky enough to live close enough to one of the cities showing the games in 3D, you can take advantage of the partnership between Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp. (NASDAQ: CIDM),  CBS Sports, the NCAA and LG Electronics USA to see the game.

How the iPad Can and Will Transform the Broadcast Booth

Posted by Christopher Byrne on , under , , , , | comments (2)

Print media guides? Who will need stinkin' print media guides now that the much balleyhooed and hyped iPad is arriving in stores? The answer is no one will if, and only if, two things happen. The first is that teams at all levels will need to get all of their historic and current information into digital form. The second is that collegiate and professional teams/leagues would need to come together and agree on a presentation standard across all leagues and teams.

While these are big "IF", the results could be a transformation for the sports broadcast booth (and production trucks), as well as print media, that is unlike any other. This is not hype, this is truth, and here is why.
